Derek attended classes at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama and graduated from the University of the West of Scotland with a BA in Business. `

Whilst studying at the University of the West of Scotland, he made his first professional stage debut as The Guide in Antigone with Lung Ha Theatre Company, performing at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh and The Platform, Glasgow. This was followed with the role of The Lawyer in Unpetit Molier. He played the lead, Young Peter, in The Hold (Lung Ha Theatre and National Museums of Scotland), and received impressive reviews for his performance.

Other theatre credits include When The Clown Laughs, (Cottiers Theatre); Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, (The S.P.A.C.E). Film & TV credits include Soldiers of the Damned (Blackdog Productions) and Outlander (Left Bank Productions). Short films include Opportunity Knocks (Livingstone Productions) and Boozy Ballad of Blackeye and Headbutt (UWS Productions). He has also acted professionally in the National Lottery commercial playing himself/lead in Dates N Mates (ITN Productions).

Outside of acting he does karate, in which he currently holds a Blackbelt 4th Dan and has been training for over two decades while having also made it to the 'Worlds' as a competitor in kata. As a world karate competitor, he was one of the first in the UK to have come out of the World Karate Championships while being part of the driving force of Para Karate.
